What Does Point Positive Mean?

One of the important rules on the river is Point Positive. When on the river, the sound of the water can be very loud and yelling isn’t effective to communicate, so we use hand signals to tell each other where to go. However, if two people haven’t agreed on a method of communication, one might be saying “Don’t go over there!” and the other may be thinking “Oh, I should go that way!” That’s why on the river, we always point positive, in the direction that you want to go. In order to make sure nobody gets confused, we never point toward a hazard or obstacle to avoid. Pointing in the right direction, you can get to safety and avoid danger.

This can be applied to the river of life as well. Point positive by focusing on what you want and what you can change. At Point Positive CPR our goal is to give you the competence and the readiness to go out into the world and be able to save a life.

In 2014, a very close friend, Curt Joyce, passed away on the Colorado River after friends provided CPR and weren’t able to revive him. Curt was a world-class kayaker and world traveler. He was a man who was extremely thoughtful, caring, and enthusiastic about life and adventures. He loved the river, and he loved his wife more than anything in the world. He inspired everyone he met and left a lasting impression on anyone he encountered. Point Positive CPR is an homage to Curt because he would always point at the camera for photos in the rapids. His positive outlook on life was infectious, and we associate the slogan “Point Positive” with Curt.

Our mission at Point Positive CPR is to use the positivity and enthusiasm that Curt embodied to prepare our students with the skills and confidence to save a life with CPR and First Aid.
